 A topper on a pickup
truck
is
not physically insured...
unless it is
specifically written into your auto policy as part of the declarations page?
However, your policy does provide
automatic liability protection.
This also applies to toppers which might
have been sold by the dealer at the time you purchased your truck.
Possible
Scenario - You are driving down the
road when a sudden gust of wind blows the topper off. The topper lands on
the vehicle behind you, causes damage to that car, then is destroyed as it
tumbles down the side of a hillside. Your auto policy will pay to have the
other drivers car repaired (Liability-Property Damage), but will not pay to
replace your topper. The topper would also NOT be covered if it was
damaged in a collision, hail storm, the truck was stolen, or it was vandalized,
just to name a few situations.
What You Should Do?
Call us if you own any toppers, utility
trailers, or camper trailers that need to be added to your
present policies. We will need year, make, model,
serial number and most importantly the estimated value.
They typically cost very little to insure and contents can
be included.
Even if you have Health
Insurance and are injured by another insured driver in an accident... you might
have to pay out of pocket for your ongoing medical expenses until the claim is
finally settled...
unless you have the optional Medical Payment coverage as part of your auto
insurance. Medical payments insurance pays medical expenses that result
from an auto accident, regardless of who is at fault, and it covers all people
riding in your car.
Possible
Scenario - You are injured in a
collision and the other driver is deemed at fault and she does have auto
insurance. The next day your neck is sore, so you go in to get xrays to
see what might be wrong, explaining to the medical professionals what happened.
The same day you get a call from your Health Insurance company notifying you
that the other drivers insurance company is responsible for paying your medical
expenses, and that until they do, you must pay out-of-pocket as you obtain
treatment. You contact the other insurance company and they inform you
that they will not reimburse you for your out of pocket expenses until the claim
is completely settled. In the meantime they ask you to fax them every
medical bill you pay. Ultimately you have really only two choices.. either
pay out of pocket and obtain the medical services you need, send them the bill,
and at the end of the claim they will cut you a check. Or if you not have
the extra cash, forego the medical treatments. In addition, who is to say
what the extent of your medical problems are and how long you might have to
undergo treatment?
